asked the Minister for Agriculture why it has been found necessary to double the price of day-old chicks supplied to applicants in Gaeltacht areas for the coming season.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Day-old Chicks.
Mr. Walsh
It has been found necessary to reduce the total subsidy paid on day-old chicks. I have therefore increased the price of day-old chicks sold to the poultry keepers outside the Gaeltacht areas. The price to them this season will be 15/- per dozen up to the 31st March, 1953, and 16/6 per dozen after that date. It does not seem unreasonable, therefore, to ask the poultry keepers in the Gaeltacht areas to pay 5/- per dozen for their chicks. The ordinary unsubsidised price of day-old chicks is 20/- per dozen, which means that day-old chicks sold in the Gaeltacht areas are still being subsidised to the extent of 15/- per dozen.
Does the Minister agree that it is a wise thing to double the price of day-old chicks and reduce the price of turkeys?
Mr. Walsh
Foolish.
