Vol. 135 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Income-tax and Surtax.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the number of persons who pay (1) income-tax, and (2) surtax.

It is estimated that the number of income-tax payers for the current year 1952-53 will be 195,000, including 188,500 individuals.

The surtax assessments being made in 1952-53 relate to the year 1951-52. The number of surtax payers for that year will be in the region of 7,000.

Under the provisions of the Finance Act, 1928, super-tax was discontinued for years subsequent to 1928-29, being replaced by surtax.

Will the Minister tell us why he gave instructions that the ordinary labourer should be assessed for income-tax?

That is a separate question.

A very separate question
