Vol. 135 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Health Services.

asked the Minister for Health if he will state the number of (a) radiological; (b) pathological, and (c) bacteriological examinations carried out on behalf of the Dublin Corporation health authority in the years 1950 and 1951; and if he will indicate in the case of each of these items the total cost involved.

The particulars requested by the Deputy, which are not readily available, are being procured from the local authority concerned. If he will repeat the question next week, I hope to be able to furnish the information.

asked the Minister for Health if he will state in respect of (1) Dublin Corporation health services, (2) Galway health authority and (3) Cork City health authority (a) the number of established posts at present filled by temporary appointments and (b) the longest period during which a post has been so filled and the post in question.

The information sought by the Deputy is not available in the Department but will be supplied to him if he repeats his question in a week's time.

asked the Minister for Health if a permanent senior thoracic surgeon is at present available for the purpose of carrying on the major thoracic surgical service of the Dublin Corporation health institutions; and, if not, if he will state how long this has been the case.

The permanent thoracic surgeon employed by the Dublin Corporation has been absent from duty on sick leave since 11th February last. The thoracic surgeon employed as substitute on a whole-time basis resigned with effect as from 5th October, and by arrangement with the Roscommon County Council, the surgeon employed at St. Patrick's Regional Chest Hospital, Castlerea, now attends the corporation's institutions during alternate weeks for the purpose of performing major thoracic surgery. This is purely a temporary arrangement and I have recommended the corporation to take immediate steps to appoint a temporary wholetime surgeon to their institutions.
