Vol. 135 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Slaughter of Cows.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if his attention has been directed to the slaughter of cows in calf; if so, if he will make an Order making it illegal for factories to accept in-calf stock for slaughter, so as to put an end to this practice immediately.

My information is that the slaughter at meat export premises of cows subsequently found to be in calf has not become abnormal. The regulations under the Agricultural Produce (Fresh Meat) Acts already provide that animals advanced in pregnancy may not be passed by a veterinary examiner for slaughter at meat export premises; and I do not consider a further Order appropriate.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary say what percentage he considers normal?

I think 5 per cent.
