Vol. 136 No. 8

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Meevagh Boatyard.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state (a) when the Meevagh boatyard was reopened for boat construction and (b) the number of (i) boats constructed since the reopening; (ii) boatbuilders employed, and (iii) orders on the yard's books at present.

I am informed by An Bord Iascaigh Mara that the boatyard at Meevagh was reopened in January, 1951. One fifty-foot boat has been built and the construction of another is well advanced. A considerable amount of repair and reconditioning work has also been done in the yard. The staff at present consists of a chargehand, four boatwrights, three apprentices and a labourer.

No indication of the work which will be undertaken in the future can be given as it will depend on the number and type of new fishing vessels required and the amount of repair work which may arise.

I wish to give notice that on the Adjournment I shall raise the subject matter of Question No. 35.

The Deputy will be informed in due course whether the matter can be raised.
