Vol. 136 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cost of Prisoners' Maintenance.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state the average weekly cost of maintaining a person serving a term of imprisonment in any of the gaols under the control of his Department.

The cost of feeding a prisoner in Mountjoy Prison during the year 1952 was 10/9 a week.

Is there a significant difference between the cost of maintaining a prisoner in a hard labour prison and the cost of maintaining a prisoner in penal servitude?

Mr. Boland

I will read the figures but for you. I have them here.

Perhaps if the Minister could give the figure in respect of Maryboro' Prison.

Mr. Boland

That is the highest. It is 16/-.

It is more expensive on the run.

It is more expensive on the prisoner and on the Government.
