Vol. 136 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Poultry Prices.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that, owing to the very unsatisfactory prices announced for old hens and table poultry, the hatchery supply farms are unable to dispose of eggs as the hatcheries are receiving a very poor demand for chicks; and, if so, if he will take steps, by making representation to the British Government if necessary, to ensure that an economic price will be paid for these birds.

Mr. Walsh

The answer to the first part of the question is "No". As regards the second part of the question, there is a free market for poultry in Great Britain and the prices obtainable on that market are determined by what the British consumer is prepared to pay.

Is the Minister not very well aware that the present price for poultry is a most uneconomic one and unless the price is reviewed the poultry industry, which is so beneficial to womenfolk in rural Ireland, will be completely wiped out? Surely the Minister does not consider that 2/6 for chickens and 1/- for hens is an economic price at the present time?

Mr. Walsh

I have explained to the Deputy that there is a free market in England for poultry and that the price is that which obtains on that market.

Why expend money on the technical side, then?
