Vol. 136 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Repair of Mayo Pier.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware of the very serious damage caused by storm to Faulmore Pier, Blacksod, County Mayo, and that a large number of local fishermen have lost their means of livelihood as a result of this pier not being repaired; and, if so, if he will state when the repair work will be started.

I am aware that the pier at Faulmore has been seriously damaged but I understand that the local fishing industry has not been affected as stated by the Deputy, as alternative landing facilities for the fishing boats employed in the area are available. It is not proposed to attempt to restore the pier because engineering advice is to the effect that the structure is beyond repair.

Could the Parliamentary Secretary indicate where there are landing facilities available in the area? It has been pointed out to me that Faulmore Pier is the only landing place in that particular area. It is the only landing place I can see in the vicinity of Faulmore—there is no alternative landing place.

The Deputy may not be aware that the fishing is mainly carried on by currachs in the area and that there is an extensive beach for landing them. In any event, the provision of slipping facilities at Blacksod is under consideration.
