Vol. 137 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerry Limestone Scheme.

asked the Minister forAgriculture if he is aware (1) that there is no limestone grinding plant in South Kerry; (2) that the sea-sand at Begnis Island, Valentia, contains 75 per cent. lime and (3) that if a dredger of about 100 tons were provided for the transport of this sand for unloading at the various piers along the South Kerry coast and then conveyed by lorry to the lands of the farmers requiring it, there would result a vast improvement in the quality and quantity of grass and crops, and thus increased production of milk and live stock; and, if so, if he is prepared to undertake the implementation of such a scheme for the benefit of the people of this undeveloped area.

Mr. Walsh

I am aware that there is no limestone grinding plant in South Kerry and that there is a deposit of calcareous sea-sand at Begnis Island. I have no funds at my disposal for the operation of a scheme such as that mentioned. The Deputy is aware that farmers in South Kerry, as in all other areas, may obtain supplies of ground limestone at a delivered price not exceeding 16/- a ton.
