Vol. 137 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - University Undergraduates' Tuition Fees.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state the number of undergraduates attending our universities whose tuition fees are paid for under either State or local authorities' scholarship schemes.

(a) In the year 1951-52, tuition fees were paid under State scholarship schemes in respect of 108 undergraduates.

(b) The award of university scholarships by local authorities is governed by Section 10 (2) of the Irish Universities Act, 1908, and does not come within my jurisdiction.

I have therefore no exact information at present as to the number of suchscholarships held in 1951-52 by undergraduates, but I am having inquiries made from the appropriate authorities and hope to be in a position to supply the Deputy with the information at an early date.
