Vol. 137 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fishing Industry.

asked the Minister for Agriculture what proposals, if any, he has in mind to develop the fishing industry in West Cork.

No special plans are in mind for development of the fishing industry in West Cork. If there are any fishermen in the area who need financial assistance in procuring fishing equipment or help in disposing of their catches to the best advantage, it is suggested that they should communicate with An Bord Iascaigh Mhara. The board are provided with funds for the provision of boats and gear on certain conditions and they also maintain a marketing organisation for the benefit of fishermen.

Has the Parliamentary Secretary any proposals in mind to develop some of the harbours? That would be of great advantage in developing the fishing industry.

As a general reply, I would say yes. Cork will be considered in the plans which will be formulated by a committee recently set up. So far, the committee has had only one meeting.

Will they also ensurethat they will not be havens of rest for Spanish and French trawlers?

Any communication addressed to the board by local fishermen seeking help in the way of loans will be considered?

Certainly.
