Vol. 138 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Army Chefs and Waiters.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state why the claim submitted by the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union almost a year ago for increased wages on behalf of the civilian chefs and waiters employed by his Department in the Dublin area has not yet been conceded; and whether, in view of the fact that the increase sought is in accordance with the settlement long since made in respect of comparable workers employed by private persons, he will now arrange to have the extra pay sought paid forthwith with full retrospective effect.

The claim for increased wages made on behalf of civilian chefs and waiters employed by my Department was duly considered and an increase was granted with effect from the 1st September, 1952, the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union having been notified of the award on the 12th November, 1952. The increase granted was in accordance with the recommendations of the Labour Court in the case of similar classes of workers employed byC.I.E., but as a result of further representations by the union the matter is being re-examined
