Vol. 138 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Kerry Bridges.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the cause of the delay in the continuation of the erection of the Gortnaskerry bridge over the Giddaugh River, Beaufort, County Kerry.

I have been informed that the works included in the contract for the erection of Gortnaskerry bridge were taken over on behalf of the Kerry County Council by theircounty engineer from the contractors in January last, following receipt of a certificate from the consulting engineer that the contractors had failed to proceed with the work with due diligence. It is understood that the contractors have disputed the action taken by the council and seek to have an abitrator appointed to consider their case. Legal advice has been obtained and is under consideration by the council.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the necessity for the erection of a new bridge to replace the old Flesk bridge, near Killarney; and, if so, if any progress is being made in the execution of the project.

There are no proposals before my Department for this bridge. I understand that the Kerry County Council are awaiting a report from a consulting engineer on the question of its replacement.
