Vol. 138 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tory Island—Telephone Communication.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when it is proposed to have the new radio telephone between Tory Island and the mainland installed.

It was hoped that supplies of the new radio telephone equipment which has been on order since 1951 would be delivered this month, but, as I announced in my Estimates speech, we have recently been advised by the manufacturers that there will be further delay. I cannot, therefore, say at this stage when the new service will be provided to Tory Island, but every effort will be made to speed up delivery.

Could the Minister indicate whether this apparatus will be available before the coming autumn? If the answer is in the negative, it means that it would be impossible to install the wireless telephone within the next 12 months.

The Minister cannot give any indication in that regard.
