Vol. 138 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Naas Telephone Exchange.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state why he does not propose to install an automatic telephone exchange in Naas when the new post office is opened there.

The Naas scheme includes provision of a new post office and automatic telephone exchange.

Because the periods required for building and equipping of each differ, the new post office will probably be opened before the exchange is ready for service

Is that why the exchange was not included in the list of exchanges which the Minister gave in reply to a question last week?

The Deputy may have noted that a small sum of £1,000 was included representing the amount likely to be spent in the current year.

The Minister might pay a visit to this site to see the condition into which the building has been allowed to get because of the delay in proceeding with the fitting out of the building.

Automatic exchanges are being erected as rapidly as possible around Dublin.

I am not talking of thetelephone exchange. I am talking of the new post office. The present post office is hopelessly antiquated for the requirements of the post office staffs, and the transaction of public business.

Is the Minister aware that the building which is to be the new post office was burned down some years ago, and that it was completely reconstructed after the fire? Will he explain why the building is not being utilised as a post office instead of being allowed to deteriorate as it is?

On the system of priorities adopted, I am satisfied that the post office authorities are doing their best. We are spending £157,000 on the improvement of post offices this year and we will do all we can to hasten these improvements.

Surely that is no answer to the question as to why this building is allowed to go idle?
