Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Soldiers' Rations.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state what is the daily food ration provided for soldiers, and the estimated cost of the ration per man.

As the reply to the first part of the question is in the form of a tabular statement, I propose, a Cheann Comhairle, with your permission, to have it circulated with the Official Report.

The cost of the ration, based on current prices, is 3/2 a day for each man.

Tinned Milk, 16 oz. tin (Net 14 ozs.) to 8 men.

Cabbage

7 ozs.

Carrots—4 ozs.

Turnips—4 ozs.

Parsnips—4 ozs.

Onions—2 ozs.

Peas—1½ ozs.

Bacon—

1½ ozs. Bacon and 2 ozs. Sausage.

Rashers

3 ozs.

1½ ozs. Bacon and 1 Egg

1½ ozs. Bacon and 2 ozs. Pudding.

1½ ozs. Bacon and 2 ozs. Liver.

4 ozs. Sausage.

4 ozs. Pudding.

4 ozs. Liver.

4 ozs. Kippered Herring.

2 Eggs.

1 Egg and 1 oz. Oatmeal.

1½ ozs. Bacon and 4 ozs. Tinned Tomatoes (or fresh Tomatoes to the same cash value as 4 ozs. of Tinned Tomatoes).

½ oz. Marmalade.

¼ oz. Cheese.

Rice

1 oz.

1 oz. Sago.

1 oz. Tapioca.

1 oz. Jam and 1 oz. Flour

1 oz. Marmalade and 1 oz. Flour.

2 ozs. Flour and 1 oz. Dried Fruit (or Apples to the same cash value as 2 ozs. of Dried Fruit.)

Salt

1½ lbs. per 100 men.

Pepper

as required—not to exceed ½ oz. per 100 men.

Mustard

as required—not to exceed ½ oz. per 100 men.
