Vol. 138 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment Statistics.

asked the Taoiseach whether in view of the marked changes in the distribution of the occupied population since 1946, he will expedite the publication by the Central Statistics Office of the volumes relating to industries and occupations compiled from the 1951 census of population.

The publication of statistics of occupations and industries from the 1951 census ofpopulation is being pressed with all possible expedition. The Deputy will have noted the considerable improvement in the time schedule of publication of two volumes of the 1951 census (relating to population of areas and by ages and conjugal conditions) as compared with previous censuses.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state from the information available to the Central Statistics Office the approximate numbers of persons at work in (a) agriculture; (b) industry; (c) transport; (d) trading and finance; (e) public administration; (f) professions; (g) personal services, and (h) other services in 1952.

While partial information is available in the Central Statistics Office as regards numbers in the different branches of economic activity specified in the question, any estimates for 1952 that it might be possible to make on the basis of this partial information would be far less reliable than estimates based on the results of the 1951 census of population, which, as regards occupations and industries, are not yet available. I would accordingly ask the Deputy to repeat his question after the publication of the volume of the 1951 census of population relating to classification by branches of economic activity, when I will endeavour to give him the estimates which he requires.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary indicate when the volume is likely to be published?

The preparation of it is being pushed forward. I cannot indicate any firm date.
