Vol. 138 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Turf Production—County Kerry.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that the proposal of Bord na Móna to discontinue turf production at Meen Bog, Listowel, County Kerry, means unemployment for a number of men with family responsibilities; and, if so, if he will now request the board to reconsider the proposal.

There is no market for turf from Meen Bog except in competition with locally produced hand-won turf. Furthermore, I am informed that Bord na Móna experienced difficulty in every season in engaging sufficient labour to meet the production programme for this bog. In these circumstances I could not see my way to request Bord na Móna to undertake production of turf at this bog during the 1953 season.
