Vol. 139 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Public Rights of Way.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the number of public rights of way established by An Bórd Fáilte under powers given to the board by the Oireachtas under the Tourist Traffic Act, 1952.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if public access to the sea at Brittas Bay, County Wicklow, for citizens anxious to avail of this amenity without the payment of a levy to private persons has been established by An Bórd Fáilte and if not if it is proposed to establish such a right under the authority vested in this board by the Oireachtas in the Tourist Traffic Act, 1952.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if a right of way proposed some months ago to be obtained by An Bórd Fáilte through the Lough Dan valley, County Wicklow, for citizens anxious to make use of this amenity has yet been established.

With the permission of An Ceann Comhairle I propose to take Questions Nos. 2, 3 and 4 together.

As the Deputy will already be aware from the reply which I gave to a question by him on the same subject on 4th December, 1952, the exercise of the functions conferred by the Tourist Traffic Act, 1952, in relation to the provision and improvement of means of access to places of scenic or other interest to the public is the responsibility of An Bórd Fáilte.

However, I understand from the board that up to the present they have examined 11 cases of this kind. In two of these cases the owners of the properties concerned have agreed to the provision of public access, and the other nine cases are still under examination.

As regards the two specific cases mentioned, I am informed that the Deputy has been in communication with An Bórd Fáilte and that he has been informed of the position. The board hope that it will be possible to reach an early amicable settlement with the parties concerned.
