Vol. 139 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Court Apparel.

asked the Minister for Justice whether he is aware that many people regard the wearing of wigs and gowns by members of the judiciary and legal profession as entirely foreign to Irish tradition; and, if so, if he will take steps to ensure the discontinuance of this alien practice.

Mr. Boland

The robes and official dress to be worn by the bench and bar are regulated by rule of court as provided by law. It is not proposed to change the law.

Would not the Minister agree that the present attire of these gentlemen is a relic of a past age and not in keeping with our Irish tradition?

Mr. Boland

I do not propose to change it, anyhow.

I maintain, Sir, that the present dress of the legal profession has a rather unnerving effect on some litigants and some witnesses. I believe it is completely silly and out of place and surely the Minister would consider the question of designing some more appropriate dress?

The Deputy is not considering that that is a question?

It definitely is a question, a Cheann Comhairle.

Would the Minister consider making them green instead of white?

How will they cover bald heads?
