Vol. 139 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - New Industries.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state where the 65 new manufacturing concerns are located, as referred to in his speech reported in the daily Press on the 16th June, 1953, the type of work carried on by those concerns and also particulars of the 25 existing concerns which are stated to have extendedtheir operations into new lines; and, further, if he will state the actual number of persons put into new employment in these concerns.

Mr. Lynch

I am arranging to place a return giving the particulars asked for on the Table of the House.

I wish to emphasise that the return includes only those undertakings which have come officially to the notice of my Department but there may be others of which there is no official record to date. It follows that publication of this return may give an unfair advantage to those firms mentioned in it, especially over similar concerns established before June, 1951.

Employment is a variable factor and it is not possible, therefore, to give up-to-date employment figures without making a special investigation.
