Dáil Éireann debate -
Thursday, 25 Jun 1953

Vol. 139 No. 14

Order of Business.

I understand that an agreement has been made that the Dáil will meet on Wednesday next from 10.30 a.m. to 10.30 p.m., and that the debate on the motion in the name of the Taoiseach should conclude on Thursday evening, the Taoiseach being called on to conclude at 4 p.m. and the division being taken about 5.30 p.m.

Is it intended to sit at 10.30 a.m. on Tuesday?

No. Wednesday.

Tuesday, 3 p.m. to 10.30 p.m.; Wednesday, 10.30 a.m. to 10.30 p.m., and the meeting on Thursday—all that time, if necessary, will be devoted to the debate on the motion.

That is right. The division on the motion will be taken on Thursday evening and the Taoiseach will be called on at 4 o'clock. If that is agreed on, perhaps it will be better to make it an order of the House.

Is the dissolution on Thursday night?

Personally, I like elections.

You need not answer that now.

On the Order of Business, might I inquire into the possibility of the motion in my name dealing with the expansion of the distilling industry being taken before the Summer Recess in view of the importance of this industry to the national economy?

I mentioned already that the possibility of having some time made available for Private Deputies' business before the end of the session would be considered, but it is difficult at the moment to promise that it will be.

Would there be a possibility, in view of the precedent set last year on the Estimate for the Department of Industry and Commerce where a motion in the name of Deputy MacBride was taken in conjunction with the Department's Estimate, to do the same thing now?

That might be considered. The Deputy would not need a motion to get an expression of opinion.

Is it intended to provide time in this Dáil or the next?

There is very little time left now.

That question would be facing whatever Government comes in.
