Vol. 140 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Production of Artificial Manures.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state (a) the total home production of superphosphates and other manures for each of the years 1949, 1950, 1951 and 1952, and (b) the total amount of superphosphates and other manures used by the farmers for each of those years.

The total home production of superphosphates and other artificial manures in each of the years 1949, 1950, 1951 and 1952 was 195,000 tons, 214,000 tons, 228,000 tons and 164,000 tons, respectively. The precise quantities of these fertilisers used by farmers in the same years cannot be stated, as particulars of changes in stocks are not available. Imports plus home production of superphosphates and other manures totalled 313,000 tons in 1949, 340,000 tons in 1950, 418,000 tons in 1951 and 281,000 tons in 1952. The figures for 1952 are provisional.

Am I to understand that there are no figures available for the importation of phosphates in these years?

I have given the total home production, and the total home production plus imports. If the Deputy subtracts one figure from the other he will get the net figure for imports.
