Vol. 140 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Limerick Harbour Development.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that schemes for harbour development and the purchase of a new dredger have been adopted by the Limerick Harbour Commissioners since 1951 and, further, that these projects are held up because the Government financial assistance promised is not forthcoming and if, in view of the urgency of the proposed projects and the relief they will give to the unemploymentposition in Limerick, he will give instructions to have the necessary financial assistance given without further delay.

A State grant of £100,000, or one-third of the cost, whichever is the less, has been allocated to the Limerick Harbour Commissioners for harbour improvement works. A grant of £50,000, or half the cost, whichever is the less, is also being made towards the purchase of a dredger. It is not correct to say that these projects have been held up because the Government financial assistance promised is not forthcoming. On the contrary, seven claims have already been made by the harbour commissioners for instalments of grant and in each case payment was made within a month of the claim being received. All claims received to date have been met.
