Vol. 141 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Turbary in County Galway.

asked the Minister for Lands if the Land Commission have yet arrived at a decision concerning the propriety of acquiring the extensive tract of turbary at Marless and Timree, Moylough, County Galway, the property of Lady Grattan Bellew, so that the needs of neighbouring landholders, currently without turbary, may be satisfied; and, if so, the nature of the decision.

This case has been considered by the Land Commission, but further inquiries and negotiations must be undertaken before a decision can be reached.

Will the Minister agree that the Land Commission have given this matter a lot of consideration in the past number of years and that no good can come from further inquiry or investigation? The Land Commission must now be in a position to arrive at a decision.

The Land Commission are in a position to decide but there are other interests concerned in the possibility of exploiting the bog. Therefore, a final decision will not be taken by the Land Commission until negotiations with those interests have advanced further.
