Vol. 141 No. 8

Committee on Finance. - Order of Business.

With a view to ending the session on a harmonious note, I would like to make a suggestion which might commend itself to the House. It is that we discharge the Order of Business as fixed earlier to-day and continue with the Committee Stage of the Workmen's Compensation Bill until completed, take then the Supplementary Estimate for the Department of Agriculture, which requires to be passed this session; then if possible, deal with the Report and Final Stages of the Workmen's Compensation Bill and of the Comptroller and Auditor-General Bill; and then adjourn. If it should not be possible to deal with the Report and Final Stages of these two Bills, I propose that we should meet on Tuesday for that purpose.

Could I ask the Tánaiste to include in that order the Courts of Justice Bill, on agreement that ministerial amendments only be taken and that the section the Minister agreed to delete would be deleted? There may be general agreement in the House that we could deal with it. I would ask the Tánaiste to include that in the Order of Business because there may be general agreement in the House that we could deal with it.

There is no objection to putting it on the Order Paper inwhat I regard as the remote possibility of dealing with it.

Once it is on the Order Paper it cannot be taken off without an order to discharge.

That is true.

This is to discharge the present order?

Yes, it is proposed to go ahead with the Committee Stage of the Workmen's Compensation Bill until it is passed, to take the Supplementary Estimate for the Department of Agriculture, and then if it is practicable to complete the Final Stages of the two Bills, Workmen's Compensation and the Comptroller and Auditor-General (Amendment) Bill. If that is not practicable then we meet on Tuesday.

We have to write amendments. If it is taken on Tuesday or Wednesday we will dispose of it expeditiously.

If the time is not available for that purpose we adjourn and meet on Tuesday.

I assume we will not take the Report Stage of the Workmen's Compensation Bill.

Not unless the Deputies agree.

Then it will not be ordered. We are telling you we would not have time to write the amendments.

In that case we will meet on Tuesday.

Is Tuesday a suitable day in view of Monday being the Bank Holiday?

Then let us make it Wednesday.

Wednesday is better.

As I informed the House we will meet on Wednesday and the sole business will be the Reportand Final Stages of these two Bills unless we get agreement.

I would like the Minister to include the other business I mentioned.

It will be ordered for Wednesday.

The business for Wednesday will be the Report and Final Stages of the two Bills, Workmen's Compensation and the Comptroller and Auditor-General Bill.

Will the Tánaiste say in the case of a hold-up that we will sit continuously on Wednesday until we finish?

I hoped there would be general agreement that we would be able to dispose of it.

In other words, sit continuously.

Before the Dáil next week there will be three Bills. Is that right?

Two definitely and the third subject to unanimous agreement.

That is fair enough.

The third will be put down and we will see whether we can get through it or not.

The Order for the Adjournment will be taken on Wednesday?

Yes. If it would be in order I would move it now.

That ought to be left until Wednesday.

That is agreed. October 20th is the date.

Do we want all stages of the Comptroller and Auditor-General Bill on Wednesday?

Why not pay the man the rate for the job?

Do not forget the Tánaiste said "on a harmonious note".
