Vol. 141 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Temporary Civil Servants.

asked the Minister for Finance if a number of civil servants employed in a temporary capacity are being dispensed with and others in similar capacities retained in employment, and if he will state on what basis those retained are selected.

Apart from temporary clerks in employment exchanges, whose position is being dealt with in a separate reply by the Minister for Social Welfare, the only discharges from the Civil Service have been of four male temporary clerks in the Central Statistics Office, who were released on 30th June last. They were recruited about two years ago for work which they were informed would be of limited duration. With the completion of this work they, of course, became redundant, and it was necessary to dispense with their services.

The problem of redundancy in certain grades in the Civil Service is at present the subject of discussion with representatives of the staff associations under the conciliation machinery for the Civil Service. Pending the outcome of these discussions it is not possible to anticipate what basis of discharge may be agreed upon should further discharges have to be effected. It is, of course, not the intention to discharge any individual who can be usefully employed in the public service.
