Vol. 142 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Export of Irish Timber.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if applications have been made to his Department for licences for the export of Irish native timber in the round; and, if so, whether in considering such application regard has been had to the serious consequences which would result from such export, if permitted, both in respect of native timber resources, and of employment in Irish sawmills, and in the Irish furniture manufacturing industry; and whether in view of these considerations, he will now definitely state that such timber exports will not be countenanced.

In considering applications for licences to export native timber in the round, due regard is had to the considerations referred to by the Deputy. Save in very exceptional circumstances, the export of round timber exceeding ten inches in diameter is not permitted, but smaller timber suitable for pit props is allowed to be freely exported. I am satisfied that the present volume of such exports will not adversely affect home interests. The position is, however, being kept under constant review.
