Vol. 142 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National Loan.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the aggregate amount of the recent National Loan purchased by (a) citizens resident in the State, (b) residents in but not citizens of the State, (c) companies or corporations registered in the State, (d) extern companies or corporations, (e) persons resident in the six north-eastern countries, and (f) companies registered in those countries.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the total withdrawal of Savings Bank deposits and Savings Certificates for investment in the recent National Loan.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state (a) the total amount subscribed by Irish banks to the recent National Loan, and (b) the total amount of departmental funds invested in the recent National Loan.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 10 to 12 together.

The available information covering the matters referred to in the questions is as follows:—

Of the total issue of £25,000,000 stock of the 4½ per cent. National Loan,1973-78, £16,292,260 was subscribed by the public and £5,000,000 by the Irish banks, the balance being taken up as to £255,500 by the sub-underwriters and as to £3,452,240 by the Minister for Finance on behalf of departmental funds.

Of the public subscriptions, allotments to addresses in Ireland totalled £14,126,540 and allotments to addresses outside Ireland £2,165,720.

No information is sought as to the purpose of withdrawals of Savings Bank deposits or encashments of Savings Certificates. In view of this and of the fact that payment for stock of the recent loan need not be completed until 17th December next, no firm estimate can be given of the amount of "small savings" diverted to the loan. On a rough estimate the amount of withdrawals and encashments to date for this purpose is of the order of £500,000.

Will the Minister say who are the underwriters who have taken the £255,000 referred to by him?

The sub-underwriters.

Who are they?

I have not got the particulars here.

Are they the banks?

They are the sub-underwriters. That is the information I have here.

Are they the banks?

If the Deputy wants further particulars in that regard he will have to put down a question.
