Vol. 142 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Land Reclamation Work.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he will consider devising a scheme under which land reclamation work on small farms will be carried out during the autumn or at such times as will least interfere with production.

Land reclamation comprises various types of work, some of which can be done at all seasons. Applicants approved for grants under Section A can choose the season most suitable to themselves in which to carry out the work. Under Section B the Department's officers endeavour as far as possible to meet the convenience of the farmers, large and small. It would not, however, be practicable to devise a seasonal scheme as suggested by the Deputy.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will have a list of outstanding applications for work tobe done under the land reclamation scheme in County Cavan prepared, giving the date on which applications were first made and the approximate date when the work will be begun.

Mr. Walsh

Applications in County Cavan are dealt with, as far as is practicable, in order of receipt. The date when outstanding applications can be attended to is governed by the availability in the county of suitable land reclamation machinery. It would not, therefore, be possible to furnish the information requested by the Deputy in regard to the dates for commencement of work in individual cases. In any event, I do not consider that any useful purpose would be served by furnishing the information asked for.
