Vol. 142 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cured Herrings: Imports.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that cured herrings produced outside the State are now being offered for sale within the Republic, thereby destroying the market for this winter's Donegal cured herrings; and, if so, if he will take immediate steps to prohibit the importation of such fish.

I am aware that cured herring is occasionally imported, but I am not satisfied thatsuch imports have the effect stated by the Deputy.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that herrings from Ardglass are already being exposed for sale in County Donegal, thereby glutting a possible market for winter-cured herring this season?

It is possible that Ardglass herrings have appeared in Donegal, but my information is that they have not the effect stated by the Deputy.
