The number of small public service vehicles licensed on 31st August, 1953, was 6,787. The expression "hackney car" is not used in the Road Traffic Act, 1933, and the figure given includes both taxis and private hire vehicles in the taximeter areas and both street service vehicles and private hire vehicles outside the taximeter areas.
