Vol. 142 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Statistics of Import Duties.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state what percentage of the total volume of goods imported in (a) 1938, (b) 1950, (c) 1951 and (d) 1952 was subject to import duties.

In the years in question the total values of goods imported subject to import duties, as percentages of the total value of goods imported, were as follows:—

Year

Percentage

1938

49.5

1950

50.4

1951

50.1

1952

47.4

Goods liable to duty are deemed to be goods nominally so liable (including those subject to such duties as package duty) and therefore include goods exempted from duty for any reason as well as those on which duty was actually levied.

The Parliamentary Secretary gave these figures as representing the percentage in relation to value. The question related to volume.

Is it value or volume?

The question asked the percentage of the total volume. The answer gave the total value of goods imported subject to import duties as percentages of the total value of goods imported.

These figures, of course, contain no reference to goods coming in under quota. I should not think they did.

They include all goods subject to duty whether the duty is levied or not.

Not subject to quota.
