Vol. 142 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Improvement of Fishery Grounds.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he has pursued proposals to fertilise with phosphates, etc., certain confined areas of the sea adjacent to our shores in order to improve quantity and size of demersal fish and induce shoaling of pelagic fish, and whether his attention has been directed to the remarkable results of such work in relation to shellfish and demersal fish in the Lough Sween experiments carried out by Gauld and Raymont.

The reply to the first part of the question is in the negative.

As regards the second part of the question I am aware of the results of the experiments referred to but I am not convinced that they are of present economic significance to our sea-fishing industry.
