Vol. 143 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - North Dublin Water Scheme.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state (a) the areas which will be served by the North County Dublin regional water supply scheme; (b) the present stage of the development of the scheme, and (c) the probable date of its completion.

The North County Dublin regional water supply has been planned to serve (a) the high-level area westward from Ballygall Road, including Finglas, Blanchardstown and Castleknock and (b) the low-level area eastward from Ballygall Road including Coolock, Baldoyle, Portmarnock and Malahide.

To ensure expedition, the work was divided into three separate contracts, two in respect of the laying of mains and the third for the construction of the reservoir at Ballycoolan. Work on the main-laying contracts was delayed by the difficulty of securing delivery of pipes. It began about 12 months ago. At the end of September last, expenditure to the extent of £63,075 had been incurred on foot of contracts totalling £134,300. The pipeline along Ballymun Road was complete, as was the rising main fromFinglas to Cappagh Cross; the pipeline from Cappagh to Ballycoolan was approaching completion; work was in progress on the pipeline from Santry to Coolock and on the pipelines from Ballycoolan to Blanchardstown and Castleknock. Under the reservoir contract, expenditure incurred amounted to £30,000 on foot of a contract of £68,150.

The acceptance of a tender for the pumps was approved last September. Having regard to the magnitude of this scheme, it would be impossible to indicate with any accuracy the probable date of completion, but at present it appears likely that the scheme should be completed before the end of 1954.
