Vol. 143 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fish Curing and Freezing.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if his attention has been drawn to a statement in the public Press on 11th November, 1953, that a millionaire fish salesman will visit Belfast and meet representatives of the Six-County Ministry of Commerce with a view to starting a fish curing and freezing plant on a large scale in Northern Ireland; and, if so, whether he will consider the advisability of meeting this man with a view to offering him suitable attractive terms to put such a scheme into operation in the Republic and thereby greatly benefit the fishing industry.

As to the first part of the question, I have seen a statement of the kind in the public Press.

The answer to the second part is in the negative.

In view of the fact that the Six-County Minister of Commerce can attract an American millionaire fish salesman and offer him attractive terms to start a fish curing and freezing plant in Northern Ireland, can the Parliamentary Secretary say why his Department cannot enter into a similar contract?

I accept the Deputy's statement that it is possible that the Government of Northern Ireland has offered terms attractive to Mr. Dawson but I do not propose to do the same thing here.

Good man!
