Vol. 143 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Appointment of Director of Broadcasting.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state the terms of appointment of the Director of Broadcasting; his age, nationality, experience and qualifications; whether he was offered the appointment without having to apply for it; and whether he has a full knowledge of Irish.

In answer to this question, I refer the Deputy to my policy statement of 5th November, 1952, in the House on the reorganisation of broadcasting.

In June, 1953, the comhairle being well satisfied with the director's services, recommended that he be appointed for three years and I approved this further appointment.

Might I ask the Minister what objection he has to giving the House details of the experience and qualifications of the present Director of Broadcasting? If my memory serves me correctly, on no occasion did the Minister give the House such information.

The House has had all the information required by the Deputy and there were statements on a number of subsequent occasions giving an account of the director's qualifications.

In order to refresh the memory of the House on these qualifications and experience, will the Minister now repeat them?

The Deputy can find them all in the statement published with the Estimate in 1952.

Might I ask the Minister, in view of the fact that I have gone through that statement and cannot find the details in it that I have asked for in this question, would the Minister now give me that information which is not in the report?

If there are any details which the Deputy cannot find he can ask another question.
