Vol. 143 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Social Welfare Staffs.

Mr. O'Higgins

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will state the number of civil servants of all grades employed in his Department.

The number of civil servants employed in my Department is 2,045. This number includes 217 part-time local agents, 51 part-time cleaners, one electrician, one fitter and one plumber but does not include 81 branch managers, who are employed on a contract basis, and 330 clerks of old-age pension committees who are officers of local authorities but are paid out of the Vote for my Department.

Might I ask the Minister whether included in that list is the recently appointed officer in charge of the Minister's bathroom in Store Street?

I have no bathroom there. That is more Fine Gael propaganda.
