Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Recruiting Drive.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will indicate the present position regarding the recruiting drive for the Garda Síochána.

An examination for recruits, conducted by the Civil Service Commissioners, was held in July, 1953; 376 of 474 candidates who sat for the examination were declared successful and 255 who were certified fit by the surgeon are at present undergoing training.

Applications for candidates for a further qualifying examination were invited in September and October, 1953, and 734 of the applicants were considered prima facieeligible to sit for the examination which will be held on the 18th instant.
