Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment Assistance in County Donegal.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he is aware that a number of applicants in the Fintown district of County Donegal have been refused unemployment assistance on the grounds that they refused to take up employment as temporary postmen at the weekly wage of £1 15s., and if, in view of the fact that their refusal was due to the smallness of the wages offered, he will arrange to have the applications reviewed forthwith.

A vacancy for a part-time postman at Fintown was notified to the Employment Exchange, Dungloe. The number of hours to be worked weekly was 15. Twelve men from the area who were applying for unemployment assistance were submittedfor the employment and refused to accept it. A deciding officer determined that they were not genuinely seeking and unable to obtain suitable employment. One of the men has appealed against the decision and his appeal will be duly determined. The other men who were refused have a similar right of appeal.
