Vol. 143 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cold Storage and Marketing of Butter.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state what his plans are for the cold storage and the marketing of butter in the coming season.

Mr. Walsh

Arrangement for the future marketing and cold storage of creamery butter have already been discussed with the Dairy Produce Consultative Council but as the whole problem is extremely complex it is unlikely that a decision will be reached before the commencement of the coming season. The industry will, of course, be given ample notice of any change in the present system which may be decided upon.

Would the Minister say who is going to bear the cost of cold storage of butter in the coming year? Will it be the Treasury or will it be the several creameries who have butter to store?

Mr. Walsh

An announcement has already been made in connection with that question.

Could the Minister tell us what it is?

Mr. Walsh

If you look up the Official Reports you will find it.

I want to ask the Minister as a supplementary question this simple question: Who will meet the cost of cold storage in the coming year? Will it be the Treasury or the creamery? Heretofore the cost of cold storage was borne by the Treasury.

Mr. Walsh

And it has already been announced that the Treasury is to bear it this year.

And they will pay for it in the coming year?

Mr. Walsh

Yes, that has already been announced.

Would it not be just as easy to be civil as uncivil?
