Vol. 143 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerry Water and Sewerage Schemes.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will indicate the water and sewerage schemes for the putting into operation of which provision has been or is being made in the financial years ending 31st March, 1954 and 1955, in the South Kerry area.

The present position as regards the provision of sanitation schemes, other than Milltown water and sewerage which is the subject of a separate question, in South Kerry is as follows:—

The construction of a water supply scheme for Cahirciveen has reached an advanced stage.

Contract drawings for Waterville sewerage have been approved and the submission of the remaining contract documents is awaited.

Contract documents for Rathmore sewerage have been approved.

Revised outline plans for Sneem sewerage have been approved.

Outline proposals for a water supply scheme to serve Dunegan/Ballinskelligs have been received from the sanitary authority and are under examination in my Department.

The appointment of a consultant to prepare a water supply scheme for Farranfore has been approved but no further proposal has been received from the sanitary authority in regard to the scheme.

Is the Minister aware that two of these schemes, one at Milltown and the other at Farranfore, referred to in the question, were approved of by the Kerry County Council at their meeting on Monday last?

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state what progress has been made towards the installation of a water and sewerage scheme for Milltown, County Kerry.

Revised outline proposals for Milltown water supply scheme have been approved in principle. Revised outline plans for Milltown sewerage scheme have also been approved but the preparation of further documents must be deferred until the water supply proposals have reached a more advanced stage.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that in some villages and towns in South Kerry as well as in certain rural areas adjacent to such villages and towns requests have been made for the extension of existing water supplies; and, if so, if he will state if any arrangements are being made for the carrying out of water supply schemes.

I understand that Kerry County Council have provided a sum of £1,213 in their current year's estimates for short extensions of existing water supplies as recommended by the county medical officer. Where it is intended to meet the cost of such extensions out of revenue, the matteris one entirely for the sanitary authority.

The sole proposal submitted to me in respect of South Kerry is for an extension of the Glenbeigh supply to Rossbeigh. This proposal is at present under examination in my Department, as the sanitary authority proposes to raise a loan to defray its cost.
