Vol. 143 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Thurles P.O. Accommodation.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he is aware of the present unsatisfactory accommodation for official motor vehicles at Thurles and for the carrying out of cleaning and repair work by postmen-drivers; and if he will state what steps are being taken to provide proper accommodation.

I recognise that the accommodation for official motor vehicles and for the carrying out of cleaning and repair work by postmen-drivers at Thurles is not of satisfactory standard. It was, however, the best obtainable when departmental motor vehicles were introduced last year and I am informed that it is still the best available. In the circumstances I am having examined the question of introducing alternative arrangements with a view to relieving postmen-drivers at Thurles of cleaning and servicing duties.

Pending the provision of proper accommodation would the Minister, as an interim measure, endeavour to improve the thoroughfare which is at present used for bringing vans in and out to the yard? I understand it is highly dangerous.
