Vol. 143 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Schools' Broadcasts.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if, in view of the outstanding success of the new director's activities in Radio Éireann, he will recommend to the director and comhairle that the whole question of initiating educational broadcasts to schools should be reconsidered with a view to the early commencement of these widely accepted valuable aids to modern educational methods.

The question of educational broadcasts will be examined in connection with any new developments in broadcasting or television considered by the Government to be desirable.

It should be stated that any extension of this kind would require increased accommodation afforded only by a radio building now under examination. Further, any educational broadcasts of a formal permanent character directed to schools would require the establishment of some supervisory council representing managers of schools of all denominations and would be primarily the responsibility of the Minister for Education. At present a feature entitled "Help you with your homework" is being considered by the officers of Radio Éireann and the Department of Education. This would be informal in character.

Many of the Radio Éireann broadcasts are educational in character and relate to rural science, Irish history, economic problems, child art, etc.
