Vol. 143 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Conference on Partition.

asked the Taoiseach if he will make representations to the British Government with a view to the holding of a conference in London or Dublin with representatives of the Governments of this country, Great Britain and the Six Counties under the chairmanship of the American Ambassador to the Republic or other impartial chairman appointedby the United States to consider (1) the problem of Partition and its solution, (2) the immediate release from jail of Mr. Liam Kelly, M.P., and (3) the admission of M.P.s from Northern Ireland to sit in Dáil Éireann; and if he will seek to have such a conference held early in the New Year.

The answer is in the negative.

Does the Taoiseach not consider that a conference on the lines suggested in the question would have very good and successful results?

They would have to come together first.

Does the Taoiseach not consider that he would be the right and proper person to bring them together?

I have given more consideration over many years to this question than the Deputy.

Will the Taoiseach not consider trying once again to have such a conference from which he might get some inspiration?

I have derived very little inspiration from anything the Deputy has ever said.
