Vol. 144 No. 1

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Language Simplifications.

asked the Minister for Finance whether the simplifications of Irish declensions, conjugations and grammatical rules, which have been recommended by the Government Translation Office and are on sale in book form by the Stationery Office to the public, have been formally brought to the notice of examiners correcting Irish papers in Civil Service Commission examinations; and if he will ensure that candidates using the forms in official use will not be at a disadvantage in the marking as against candidates adhering to the old grammatical usages.

The Deputy's question relates, presumably, to the booklet entitled "Gramadach na Gaeilge— Caighdeán Rannóg an Aistriúcháin". So far as I am aware the booklet has not been brought to the notice of examiners correcting Irish papers for examinations conducted by the Civil Service Commission.

The preface to the booklet indicates clearly that it was published in order to afford the public an opportunity of expressing their views on the grammatical standards suggested in advance of any decision as to their ultimate adoption for official use.

Would the Minister say if the same notice will appear on the new issue which the Taoiseach indicated, in reply to an earlier question, it is proposed to issue?

That is a separate question.
