Vol. 144 No. 1

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Civil Service Arbitration Award.

asked the Minister for Finance if, in view of the substantial improvement in the public finance, he will now consider paying to civil servants the moneys claimed by them as due if the award of the arbitrator had been implemented with effect from the date set out in the award.

As the Deputy is aware, Dáil Éireann on 28th May, 1953, adopted a motion approving of the Government's decision to give effect to the finding of the Civil Service Arbitration Board subject to the modification that the pay increases would operate with effect from 1st April, 1953. It was made clear in the course of the debate that the modification proposed by the Government represented the utmost to which the Government was prepared to go and the utmost that the Government in fairness to all sections of the community should be asked to do. This decision must be taken as final.

As a gesture to Peadar, would the Minister not consider it?
