Vol. 144 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Corporation Supplementary Housing Grant.

Mr. A. Byrne

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that the Dublin Corporation have received close on 1,000 applications for the supplementary grant of £137 under the Housing (Amendment) Act, 1952, and that half of the applications have been rejected or postponed because of a doubt as to the interpretation to be placed on Section 11 (b) of the Housing (Amendment) Act, 1952, and if he has received a recommendation from the Dublin Corporation that the empowering Act be amended so as to remove the anomalies now existing; and, if so, if he will state what action he proposes to take in the matter.

I am aware that the corporation have had legal advice which has involved the rejection of 265 applications for grants of the type in question up to the 28th January last. Whether some of the legal anomalies referred to do in fact exist is open to doubt and the matter requires further clarification before I could decide as to the legislative amendments, if any, which I would be warranted in recommending. The matter is being pursued in correspondence with the corporation.

Mr. A. Byrne

Would the Minister receive a deputation from the corporation to explain matters, if necessary?

The Minister and his Department are aware of all the factors in the case and there is nothing new that a deputation can convey to us, so far as I know.
