Vol. 144 No. 6

Joint Restaurant Committee—Motion.

Tairgim:—

Go bhfuil sé oiriúnach téarmaí tagartha Chomh-Choiste an tSeomra Bhídh, a bunaíodh de bhun na nOrduithe a rinne Dáil Éireann an 8ú Samhain, 1951 agus an 15ú Samhain, 1951, agus de bhun na nOrduithe a rinne Seanad Éireann an 21ú Samhain, 1951, a leasú trí na focail "chun cúnamh agus comhairle a thabhairt don Cheann Comhairle i dtreoradh agus i stiúradh Seomra Bhídh an Oireachtais" a scrios agus na focail "chun Seomra Bídh an Oireachtais a threoradh agus a stiúradh" a chur ina n-ionad.

De bhrí ná fuil na lónadóirí a bhíodh i bhfeighil seomra bídh an Oireachtais go dtí seo sásta leanacht leis an ngnó taréis deireadh na míosa so, tá socair ag Comh-Choiste seomra an bhídh an obair a stiúrú iad féin mar thriail, go ceann bliana, go dtí an 31ú Márta, 1955. Dá bhrí sin, ní mór an t-Ordú a rinne an Dáil an 8ú Samhain, 1951, a leasú chun an t-údarás stiúruithe a thabhairt don Chom-Choiste. I have been explaining that the reason for this motion is that the directors who were in charge of the Dáil restaurant service up to now have given notice that they are not continuing after 1st March. It will, accordingly, be necessary to amend the Order of Dáil Éireann made on 8th November, 1951, in order to give the Joint Restaurant Committee of the Oireachtas power to manage affairs in the direction and control of the Oireachtas restaurant itself.

I, of course, agree with the motion, but I wonder if it might be considered whether, in view of the fact that the functions of the restaurant committee will be different from what they have been up to now, and substantially more onerous, together with the fact that there is the necessity to make very substantial alterations, it would be desirable to discharge the Orders entirely and to appoint a new committee. There will be considerably more work involved than has been involved in the past. I think the House will agree there is very substantial room for improvement. It is a matter for the members themselves, or for the appointing committee, to consider whether they will reconsider the whole matter in the light of the changed circumstances.

Motion put and agreed to.
Seanad Éireann to be notified accordingly.
