Vol. 145 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wood-pulp Industry.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state what grants he is prepared to make available and whether he is prepared to prohibit the importation of wood-pulp to encourage the establishment of a wood-pulping industry in the Republic of Ireland by private enterprise.

Mr. Lynch

The Deputy does not appear to be aware that since 1953 wood-pulp is being manufactured by private firms. My information is that the annual arisings of forest thinnings, from which wood-pulp is made, are insufficient to meet the requirements of existing manufacturers, and that this situation will persist until 1956. In the circumstances the question of the prohibition of wood-pulp imports does not at present arise.

The promoters of any project, involving the use of wood-pulp, to be located in an undeveloped area are entitled to apply to An Foras Tionscal for assistance under the Undeveloped Areas Act.
